Fundamaya
from Saguaro’s Lea Cuzner:
February 2026
Dear Friends,
I went to Guatemala with an organization called FundaMaya in 2023 with my sister’s UCC church in California. I am going again this year from March 6 – 15. I would like to ask for your help.
This organization is well established in the Lake Atitlan area and provides a variety of services to the Mayan people. They have programs that focus on education, family aid, sewing, income-generating programs and homes for animals. Over 80% of their employees are Mayan. During our time with FundaMaya, we will be painting murals in the FundaMaya preschools, working on the sewing/quilting vocational education program, donating and installing fuel-efficient, safe stoves and beds to families in need. We will be taking donations to and participating in activities at their preschools, fellowshipping with and feeding lunch at one of their Elder Care Programs, and taking some time for cultural activities.
If you would like to support some of our endeavors in Guatemala, the following are donations that the Community Church of Poway is collecting:
Shoes and socks for preschoolers, sizes 10 – 2 and reading glasses

Into the Wilderness: Lent at Saguaro Christian Church
Jesus went into the wilderness, a time during which he was tempted with all tht one could imagine as the riches of the world. Yet he did not falter; he did not waiver; he stayed true to who he was and who he was born to be. In the wilderness, more of who Jesus is was revealed to us. We have an opportunity to take this season of Lent and use it to discover more about who we are—to journey with on another in experiencing the world and experiencing ourselves anew. We may be change, we may stay the same, but we will certainly see the presence of God in whatever wilderness we wander through.
We invite you to sign up / show up for any or all of these Lenten events!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Yesterday in worship we celebrated Epiphany. We heard the story of the Magi and were invited us to consider the stars that show up in our lives.
How do we know they are God drawing near or a distraction away from God? Epiphany means revelation, the moment when something hidden becomes visible.
When God is not just believed in, but recognized. The Magi notice that something in the sky has shifted and instead of dismissing it, they pay attention. They stop. They follow.
Epiphany is not just about a star long ago. It’s about learning how to recognize God’s nearness now especially in a world crowded with flashing lights, loud voices, and urgent demands for our attention.
The Epiphany story in Matthew gives us a pattern. Click through to read about it.

Gratitude Season at Saguaro
Saguaro is a community of generational generosity. Everyone has something to share! Generational Generosity recognizes places of reciprocal relationships where as we are filled, we in turn give: of our treasure, our time, our gifts, and our skills so that the whole kin-dom of God may flourish on earth as it is in heaven. We give because it's who we are. We give because we acknowledge our need for each other, for God and to become whole.
So for ‘Sacred Recipes, Shared Gifts,’ as we reflect on our commitments and pledges for the coming year, you are invited to share what your commitment will be, but also to share your favorite crockpot, casserole, or dessert recipe! Together, may we ensure there is food on every table, every night, no matter how busy the day is and that Saguaro Christian Church continues its ministries of feeding folks mind, body and spirt as food does so much more than feed bellies.

Film screening: Samaritans
Sunday, October 12, 11:30 am
Lunch and a movie
Q&A with the filmmaker afterward!
Documentary filmmaker David Damian Figueroa has spent the last few years working on this film. "Samaritans" examines a seldom-explored aspect of extreme volunteering and migration, specifically focusing on Nogales and Sasabe, as well as a twenty-three-mile stretch of one of the deadliest land crossings in the world: the US-Mexico border in Southern Arizona.
In the shadow of remarkable human struggle, Samaritans weaves a poignant narrative of hope and humanity along the US-Mexico border in Southern Arizona. The film highlights the importance of extreme volunteering and the compassion shown by those providing life-saving aid to migrants facing harsh realities and often deadly challenges in the Sonoran Desert.

It’s Saguaro’s time to shine with TIHAN’s Poz Café!
Saguaro is a long-time faith community partner of the Tucson Interfaith HIV/AIDS Network (TIHAN), a local non-profit that brings together religious, secular, corporate, and non-profit organizations to create an inclusive support network for people living with HIV.
One of TIHAN’s programs is a monthly lunch for people in the wider community who live with HIV/AIDS. This event is known as Poz Café. Poz Café is an opportunity for persons living with HIV/AIDS to get out of the house, take a break, meet other positive people, and enjoy great food!
Volunteers from local faith communities (that’s us!) provide a fantastic, delicious, and nutritious lunch. This is followed by time to “hang out,” chat, participate in a game or two of bingo, enjoy the raffle of fun and useful gifts, and receive a CarePackage.
