Please bring in clothing for Casa Alitas!
Although there has been some news coverage about changes occurring here in Pima County about federal funding for migrant services, we want you to know that Casa Alitas (a program of Catholic Community Services) continues to welcome and care for asylum-seekers who have been processed by Border Patrol as legally approved to seek asylum' they are referred to as LPAs. They are brought to Casa Alitas Welcome Center to receive care while they connect with their sponsors and move onto the next leg of their journey.
Sometimes they arrive wearing paper clothing (issued by Border Patrol), with no or few items of clothing, with sores and blisters from walking through difficult terrain in flimsy shoes. At Casa Alitas we try to provide basic clothing (one set of underwear and socks) and if needed, shirt, pants, jacket, and if we have them, shoes. However, the new funding does not allocate money for clothing, so now, more than ever, clothing donations are needed. We are focused on only serving families with children under 10, pregnant women, and other vulnerable people. (Other LPAs are sent to another shelter, run by a for-profit entity.)
Saguaro has been faithful in making clothing donations; your ongoing support is valued. Please continue to remember those struggling to seek a better life here. Please bring your clothing donations to the large bin in our narthex.
Clothing donations and toiletries can also be accepted at St. Mark’s Church, 3738 E. 2nd St., Monday & Thursday 9-12 pm.
